General information on vaccines, vaccination and immunization

What is Vaccination?

Vaccination is a simple, safe, and effective way of protecting people against harmful disease before they come into contact with them.

Vaccine Safety and Development

How do we know that COVID-19 vaccines are safe?

There are strict measures in place to help ensure the safety of all COVID-19 vaccines. Like all vaccines, COVID-19 vaccines need to go through rigorous tests and clinical trials, reviewed by independent expert committees before they can be used. Once a vaccine has been approved and is being rolled out in a country, it is very closely monitored to make sure that it remains safe for use and there are no adverse impacts experienced.

Access and Allocation

Why haven’t we all received our vaccines yet?

Currently there is greater demand for COVID-19 vaccines than vaccine manufacturing companies can produce.

For now, due to the limited supply and high global demand for COVID-19 vaccines, vaccines will be prioritized and provided to those who are considered most at risk or vulnerable to COVID-19.

Effects of Virus Variants on COVID-19 Vaccines

What is a COVID-19 variant?

All viruses – including the virus that causes COVID-19 – evolve over time. When a virus replicates or makes copies of itself, it sometimes changes a little bit, which is normal for a virus. These changes are called “mutations”. A virus with one or more new mutations is referred to as a “variant” of the original virus.

Need to continue other COVID-19 Preventative Measures

After vaccination, do I still need to practice the other preventative measures?

Yes. Vaccines will be an important tool in fighting COVID-19, but even the most effective vaccines will not end the pandemic on their own.

For instance, it is too early to know if COVID-19 vaccines will provide long-term protection against the virus. That's why we must continue using all the other tools and preventive practices for fighting COVID-19.

Individuals must continue taking steps to protect themselves and others. This includes hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, physical distancing and staying at home if feeling unwell as well as following other public health recommendations.
